Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Tax Director to assist in managing a diverse tax compliance and planning function across a large privately held business enterprise. This role combines technical tax expertise, compliance leadership, staff management, and strategic involvement with ownership and executive leadership.
The successful candidate will oversee federal, state, and local tax compliance across multiple entity types, mentor a growing tax team, manage complex tax projects, and serve as a key advisor to company leadership on tax matters. Approximately 80%+ of the role is focused on federal and state income tax matters, with exposure to partnership, S corporation, individual, estate, and gift taxation.

The position provides exposure to a broad range of tax disciplines across real estate, family office, energy, and investment operations. The Tax Director will work closely with ownership, the CFO, VP of Tax, and AVP of Tax while helping shape the future of the tax organization.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance Leadership
Review and prepare, as needed, federal, state, and local S corporation, partnership, and individual tax returns.
Manage quarterly and annual estimated tax calculations.
Prepare and review tax projections for ownership and related entities.
Ensure timely filing and compliance across all entities.
Technical Tax Responsibilities
Serve as the technical resource for:
Subchapter K partnerships
Subchapter S corporations
Qualified Business Income (QBI) matters
Individual taxation
Estate and gift tax issues
Research complex income and indirect tax matters.
Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and evaluate their impact on the organization.
Planning & Advisory
Participate in strategic tax planning initiatives.
Support transaction structuring and merger/acquisition analyses.
Assist in operational planning and implementation of tax-efficient structures.
Provide guidance to business leaders on tax implications of operational decisions.
Team Leadership
Directly manage 2–4 tax professionals.
Mentor and develop tax staff.
Establish best practices for tax compliance, documentation, and process improvement.
Foster a collaborative and service-oriented department culture.
Tax Controversy
Assist with federal and state audits.
Respond to agency notices and inquiries.
Coordinate with outside advisors where necessary.
Requirements
Must-Have Qualifications
Minimum 8 years of tax experience.
Significant experience with:
Real estate industry taxation.
Partnership taxation (Subchapter K).
S corporation taxation (Subchapter S).
Individual taxation.
Federal and state income tax compliance management.
QBI reporting.
Estate and gift tax concepts.
Tax research and memoranda.
Prior tax team management experience.
Preferred Qualifications
12+ years of tax compliance experience.
State pass-through entity tax expertise.
Sales and use tax knowledge.
Investment partnership experience.
Oil & gas tax experience.
Investment tax credit experience.
CPA / MST
